Our stay at Abbyglen far exceeded our expectations. From the professional friendly staff to the amazing food. This was my wife's first visit to Ireland and I can promise you we will have Abbeyglen in our plans for our next visit. The warmth of the other guests and visitors to the bar on Tuesday night was amazing and completed the experience. Thank you

Staff very friendly and helpful. The only complaint that I had was the time between the courses at dinner. Starter, main course, desert were nearly on top of each other - nothing relaxing about that. If felt harried.

We had a wonderful stay at Abbeyglen Castle. We were traveling with a group of eight and we were made to feel so welcome. In fact, we were the "VIP's" from Ohio! Employees made us feel that they wanted and appreciated that we were there. Thanks for the great visit.

The hotel was better then I even imagined. We were given a fantastic room that was beautifuly decorated and even had a fire place. When we first saw our room we had thought the front desk had made a mistake since the room was a lot nicer then we had imagined. The restaurant was very nice and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. I would recommend this place to anyone traveling to Ireland. I plan on staying when I make a return visit.

Lovely facility...very spacious rooms and grounds. It is within walking distance of Clifden which is a wonderful little village. The personnel at Abbeyglen were very attentive and friendsly. Love the skeleton key that opens the room. The reason for the 4 rather than 5 is due to lack of wireless connectivity in the room. Even in the lobby, it was pretty sketchy.

Greetings We are the Spencer's of Sacramento, California. We have stayed at the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel during our last two visits to Ireland. The Abbeyglen rests on a hillside overlooking the best of both very pastural and rustic Irish scenery. The Abbeyglen is comfortable home of great character and style. We especially love the warmth of the owners and Staff who truly make you feel at home and extremely special. Paul and Brain Hughes are dear friends and I look forward to my time with them during each visit to Ireland. So if you find yourself in Ireland The Abbeyglen Castle and Hotel in Clifden is highly recommended by the Spencer's of California

Our biggest complaint is that we could not stay longer. Paul was amazing in his attentiveness to each person in the dining room. What a delightful man! Velta was endearing and provided us with helpful local information. The duo providing the music were wonderful musicians. Our meals were scrumptious. The rooms were well appointed and comfortable. And Gilbert was charming!

Enjoyed my stay very much. The staff are friendly, the food was delicious and it's about a 5 minute walk into town center. The rooms are beautiful, beds are comfortable and very clean. The water pressure was not that great but it is to be expected. The African Grey Parrot "Gilbert" was the best host, I kind of miss the little guy. Enjoyed the live entertainment in the evening!

myself and my wife stayed for 1 night b and b.We found the hotel very comfortable. The room had a 4 poster bed which was very comfortable a bathroom with a bath and a shower(usually you only get a shower or bath) bathrobes as well- nice touch. There was a pianist in the bar who was a gifted musician with a fantastic voice . Breakfast the following morning was all you could eat but i would have liked a pot of coffee rather than a desepenser at the top of dining room . All in all a very stay. enjoyable stay

MY DREAM WAS TO STAY IN A CASTLE WHILE IN IRELAND. MY DISAPPOINTMENT WAS IN HOW SMALL IT WAS. THE BELL BOY WAS GREAT, AS WAS THE ONES WORKING THE FRONT DESK. WE HAD A ROOM WITH 2 BEDS AND NON SMOKING WHICH WAS VERY NICE, JUST SMALL. WE DID HAVE TO REQUEST THAT THE FAN IN THE BATHROOM BE REPLACED DUE TO THE UNBEARABLE NOISE IT WAS MAKING. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPORTED BY THE MAID LONG BEFORE WE ARRIVED TO THE ROOM. WE ENJOYED GILBERT (THE BIRD) EACH TIME WE WENT BY HIS CAGE. THE BREAKFAST THAT CAME WITH OUR ROOM WAS OK. ON THE MORNING THAT WE WERE TO LEAVE AND DRIVE BACK TO DUBLIN, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL IF THE STAFF HAD ARRIVED ON TIME FOR WORK. AS I WAS PUTTING ITEMS IN THE CAR, I WATCHED 4 PEOPLE HURRING IN AND THEY WERE ALL UP IN THE DINING ROOM AND IT WAS ABOUT 15 MINUTES AFTER 8 AM AND BREAKFAST STARTS AT 8 AM. MY BROTHER STOOD AND WAITED FOR THE SCRAMBLED EGGS TO BE BROUGHT OUT, AND BY THE TIME THEY ARRIVED, I WAS DONE WITH MY BREAKFAST. WE WERE NOT THE ONLY ONES UNHAPPY ABOUT THIS DELAY. I DID MENTION TO THE FRONT DESK AS I TURNED IN OUR ROOM KEYS, THAT BOTH MORNINGS THAT WE EAT IN THE DINING ROOM, WE SAT AT A DIFFERENT WINDOW, AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH NICER OF A VIEW IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE SPIDER WEBS IN ALL THE CORNERS OF THE WINDOWS. MAYBE THIS IS PART OF THEIR OLD LOOK, BUT I DO NOT LIKE IT. THE ONE NICE THING, EVERYONE WORKING THERE WAS VERY PLEASANT. SO WITH ALL THIS SAID, I LEAVE IT UP TO OTHERS TO DECIDE IF THEY WANT TO STAY OR NOT.

We had six adults in our party, and everybody was very happy with the accomodations. They were clean, spacious, and fit in with the preconception of staying in a castle.
The staff were courteous and helpful, especially in the bar when we stayed late one night.
We wish we could have stayed longer, and taken more advantage of the castle's ammenities.

First, and foremost; Breathtaking. We walked in and where greeted by smiles and a "Welcome to the Abbeyglen!-We upgraded you to our Suite!" They even noted us in their system as "V.I.P" for our stay...(We were getting married within Days!) The Owner, Paul, was the sweet guy we've ever met--The entire staff was just ready to have a good time WITH YOU. We woke up every morning, feeling Ireland was just a Dream--it exceeded all expectations we ever thought we had; The Abbeyglen has made us Life Patrons; we WILL be seeing them for the years to come. Whether you're staying one night, or you're entire Ireland stay...You'll feel the same way! Guaranteed!!!!!!!

We found the hotel staff to be warm and friendly. The food both for breakfast and evening meals was excellent with a good variety on the menu. The room was large, abit dated (but it is a castle)? That said, it was spotlessly clean and well presented. The management were on hand and very friendly. We particularly enjoyed the bar and the entertainment. Getting the guests up for a song is always good fun. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would not hesitate to return.

My stay at Abbeyglen Castle was beyond expectations. I had made the decision to break away from my travel group so I could spend a night on my own at Abbeyglen. Unfortunately I sprained my ankle two days before my arrival. I was disappointed that I wasn't able to walk around the castle grounds but to my delighted surprise, the staff at Abbeyglen went above and beyond to make my stay as relaxing as possible. They continually asked how they could assist me around and Anne in particular went out of her way to ask how I was feeling and what she could do to help. Every staff member brought the castle to life for me and I would highly recommend that anyone visiting Ireland stay a night or two at Abbeyglen.

We had a wonderful weekend in the Abbeyglen, we arrived late on the Friday well past the scheduled time for dinner and the staff and manager were brilliant in accomodating us. The food was so good the first night we stayed in the second despite having a booking in Clifden. The overall atmosphere in the hotel is really relaxed and the rooms are magnificent. It was very nice. We were hoping for a room with wood floors, but that was our fault due to coming a night early . The breakfast was fabulous, as was the dining room and we loved the owner's outgoing welcome and extra touch with a flag on our table. He is a perfect host. I must put in a good word for the woman bartender who was working the night of our arrival. She went above and beyond extending herself to make us feel comfortable and get us the best room available. She helped to make our stay that much more special. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Highly recommend a weekend break to this hotel. it is fantasticly run with the hands on approach of the owners. Every member of staff goes out of their way to be friendly and helpful. The suite we stayed in was at the top of the castle and it was second to no other room I have stayed in throughout the country to date. There is a terrific atmosphere in the dining room but particularly the bar where we were entertained by a pianist and singer each night. truly wonderful place -not to be missed

My Fiance and I had an amazing time while staying at Abbeyglen. The food was fantastic, the people were very friendly, and our room was beautiful. Our stay at Abbeyglen afforded us the opportunity to see the real Ireland, not just city tourist traps. We would return in a heartbeat!

Great location, disappionting facade. The room was comfortable though very dated considering the rating and price. The evening meal was enjoyable and staff were attentive, until claering started when they forgot the guests needs. Before dinner the Bar manager was rather opinionated and very rude to the solitary bar staff in earshot of guests, which rather spoiled our experiance.

I was glad to receive the invitation to review our stay in the hotel and I hope that my feedback my be of some use to you.
Just to set the scene, my husband and I attempt to get away once a year for an over night stay in a luxury hote. Last year it was the Lyrath in Kilkenny and the previous year, the Loughryn in Leitrim. From your website, we were expecting the same level of luxury and service. With four teenage kids, there is very little of either in our day to day lives!
We arrived in Cliften on a very wet Saturday afternoon and the first thing that hit us was how drab the building looked and how badly the grounds were maintained. When we went inside, the interior looked shabby and behind the reception were two girls, one in a uniform, one dressed casually. Our room was not ready as we were early, so we took a quick look around. Perhaps our expectations of luxury were too high but the place looked tired and rundown. We thought we'd have a quick game of table tennis to cheer ourselves up but the only ball available was squashed so we left and went down the town for some lunch.
When we returned our room was ready and we went up.The room was grand though the shower took about five minutes to heat up.Again, it was the expectation of luxury that was our difficulty. If we had booked into a two or three star hotel that advertised friendly service with an easy going atmosphere, we would have been delighted with the hotel but we were promised a four star experience and so our expectations were much higher.
The food was lovely and there was a great atmosphere in the hotel that night (we especially enjoyed Roger's little speech) but if you were to ask us if we would recommend your hotel, the answer would have to be 'no' because it does not live up to it's promise of four star luxury.
I hope this is of some use to you and I do believe what you are offering is a lovely experience, a unique flavour of the West, but where if fell down badly for us was the wide gap between expectation and reality.
I'm guessing you will not want to put this review up but I do hope it is of some use to you and that 2011 is a good year for you all.

The Abbeyglen was our first night's stay in Ireland, and the first night of our honeymoon. Our room was gorgeous, the grounds were breathtaking, and the service was outstanding. We arrived in the afternoon before our room was ready, but had a sandwich and pint in your bar, and the atmosphere is very cozy. Anne, the bartender/woman of many talents was the highlight of our stay. She was extremely funny and provided humor when showing us our room, she poured a perfect Guiness, and the next morning urged us to stay another night and provided points of interest in the area. If we didn't have a hotel booked for the following night, we would have stayed another night. We highly recommend the Abbeyglen!

My stay at the hotel was fantastic. Food was exceptional and the atmosphere in the bar was very enjoyable. I did not give full marks for my stay as my room and the bedding had a very strong smell of smoke. The room had no smoking signs but these had clearly been ignored by the previous occupants. I would stay here again.

It was a magical totally "Irish" stay!!! Dinner was so much fun on Tuesday Irish Night. Musicians played while we were eating and then after in the pub. John was a fabulous host. He was very attentive to his guests at dinner and breakfast as well as a huge welcome when we checked in. Our room was huge. On the ground floor at the end of the hallway. Picture windows towards the grounds. We were very lucky that we stayed in three castle hotels during out stay in Ireland. Each was a totaly different experience. I think that Abbeyglen was perhaps the most traditional of them all. Loved it!!!!!

Thank you for the opportunity to comment. My husband and I stayed in Room #10 for two nights. We were pleased with the size and decor of the room. Also, the room was pleasantly warm in winter. The jacuzzi tub was quite large, although the bog water was a bit disconcerting. Our toilet stopped working on our first day there. That was unacceptable, although it was fixed promptly. In the furture, should that happen to a guest, I would recommend that you issue them a coupon for free drinks or something of that sort. In all, our stay was very nice. My husband's and my only big complaint is that there is a terribly strong odor of cat urine in the bar. It is particularly bad near the bar and piano area. We tried to sit nearer to the fire when we went to have tea, but the odor was disgusting and made eating and drinking in the bar very difficult. It is possible that the odor is not cat urine, but something else that smells terrible. But I would suggest that you figure out where the bad smell is coming from and correct it. Again, in all our stay was very nice. The restuarant was very good, food and service was excellent. Thank you, Liz

I am glad to have this chance to voice my comments, as I had been intending to send an email tonight anyway. I was dissatisfied with my stay because I did not, in fact, have a stay at Abbeyglen. We were to stay on the night of 12/27 but a blizzard in the US on 12/26 stopped all air travel and we were unable to arrive in Ireland as planned until several days later. I emailed Abbeyglen Castle the minute I found out our flight was cancelled (with over 24 hours notice prior to our scheduled arrival) to find out if we would still be charged. Our cancellation was unavoidable, but not only were we charged the entire amount, my email was never even responded to. While I understand there is a no-refunds policy, in other situations, I was offered a credit for a future visit or a partial refund. While I understand that your policy is your policy and it is what I agreed to at booking, some leniency in cases that are entirely out of our hands would have been much appreciated. At Abbeyglen, I was not even given a response email and then sent this "How did you like your stay?" survey. Your hotel is beautiful and we were very much looking forward to our stay, after hearing nothing but good things. Perhaps on a future visit, I will look into a stay at a different castle because I was not impressed by the lack of communication in this situation.

The Abbeyglen Castle Hotel in Clifden was by far the highlight of a great honeymoon in Ireland. The staff was extraordinarily friendly and went out of their way to make everyone feel at home. Our only regret was that we didn't stayed an extra night. Abbeyglen is definitely on our places to see again if we ever get back to Ireland and I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates a friendly, homey place to stay. Say 'hello' to the parrot for us.

We had a lovely time in the hotel. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was delicious. The room was a little bit cold but I dont think that this could have been helped much as was snowing that weekend. One criticism would be that none of the dinner menus were to our taste on either nights that we stayed and it was quite expensive. This is not a reflection on the hotel but our personal taste !!!!Would definetely recommend the hotel to family and friends and would stay there again.

The personal touch is what makes this hotel. The proprietors were "hands on" during all meal times and inter-acted with the guests which was very nice. My husband booked this trip to AbbeyGlen for my birthday and it was absolutely perfect. From the location, which was BREATHTAKING, to the Castle which was GORGEOUS, our suite which was DIVINE, to the food which was OUTSTANDING. On top of that, a birthday cake was made for me, everyone in the restaurant sang Happy Birthday and we were given a bottle of champagne which was a lovely gesture on behalf of the Hotel. Truly the best birthday I have ever had, even the weather was perfect! I can't wait to pay another visit!!!

The overall experience was pleasant. The service and food was to a good standard. However, the heating levels in the bar and restaurant are excessive particularly in the evening when there is a crowd. So much so that I was forced to leave the bar area on a number of occasions as the heat and stuffiness was just unbareable. Better ventilation is badly needed. Also I dislike the practice of adding 12.5% service charge to the bills on checkout. In most establishments service charge is OPTIONAL to reward good service. Whilst the service is good at the hotel, being "forced" to pay a charge is like being in the US where tipping is no longer "optional". This is a bad reflection on the Irish service industry and unfortunately leaves a bad taste in the mouth on check-out! I am not alone in my feeling as I heard a number of other guests comment on this. Some made the comment to the reception staff whereas others were complaining amongst themselves (this is always more worrying as they tell other people rather than telling the service provider). I know it is in the terms and conditions but if it is true cost, then include in it the price. If it is a true service charge make it optional. Either way it will lead to better transparency in billing and happier clients. I would be curious as to your response to these comments.

Very enjoyable experience. Loved the picturesque setting, the personal touches - the evening sing song was great, the staff both warm and professional, the service excellent. On leaving the Abbeyglen we stayed in another 4*hotel in Westport which had all the requisite elements of a hotel of that rating but none of the character and warmth of the Abbeyglen. The only difficulty I experienced was having to make the booking through the central booking facility. My call was not returned and it took three attempts before I secured the booking which I eventually completed on line. There are no doubt sound business reasons for engaging such a facility, however in these straitened times I find it hard to understand why a customer may not ring a service provider directly and make a booking. Only I was intent on staying in the Abbeyglen, the non return of a telephone call would suffice usually for me to go elsewhere. However, it was worth persevering, we very much enjoyed our stay and plan to return in the not too distant future. I would have no reservation whatsoever in recommending the charming Abbeyglen to others.

Overall, the front desk staff was very helpful, the food and beverage service was great, and the valet service was good. We would happily recommend this hotel to friends. Our only wish had been that our two next-door rooms were able to connected by the common door, but there was no key available.

We had a lovely time in Abbeyglen. The lovely fire iand the 4 poster bed in the room made it really romantic. We had dinner there as well and it was top class. We had a great laugh playing snooker and table tennis. The only small comment I would make is that the leisure facilities didn't appear very inviting as they were hard to find and looked very unused and we were sceptical about using the hottub as the water didn't look too fresh. To be honest it's probably not something you need to offer...the wonderful food, atmosphere, and surroundings is enough. The guy in the restaurant was super friendly (probablly the owner/manager??) which I thought was lovely and I like the idea of the flags of your country on the tables - could do with a few cork flags though!!

Abbeyglen is a place I always enjoy visiting for my long weekend breaks. Its a place where I can get away from all the stresses of life and let my hair down and recharge the batteries. It is a very welcoming place, with a word and a smile from all the staff. There is no request to small, all requests will be sorted. The managment (owners) take an active part in ensuring that all their guests have an enjoyable and memorable time. You leave the Abbeyglen feeling relaxed, happy and ...well, tired!!...from the late nights of "craic" in the bar!!

Fantastic place -- lovely, spacious room with a comfortable four-poster bed and large bathroom. Lots of character in the hotel, starting with Paul, the kind co-owner who sent up glasses of wine when we arrived, and personally went over the best day-hikes with us (which were great), and Gilbert the parrot in the front lobby, wolf-whistling and wise-cracking as we walked by. The full Irish breakfast was excellent, and lasted us until tea was served at 4:00 PM - excellent scones and jam.
The Sky Road is aptly names, with terrific ocean and mountain views.
Walking down to Clifden from the hotel, the view of the town spires, the Twelve Bens and the distand Maumturk mountains was unforgettable. A fairy-tale castle and a great bargain for the price. We would love to go back.
