El Calafate is located in the Santa Cruz province and takes its name "calafate" from the small shrub which has yellow flowers in spring and purple fruit in summer. This fruit is typical of the South of Patagonia; the appetizing berry is used to make jam. According to the tradition, whoever eats calafate will always return for more. In reality those who come to 'El Calafate' do not leave.

Santa Cruz' famous attraction is Glacier Perito Moreno (Glaciar Perito Moreno) and the eternal ice fields that surround it. It is considered one of the most important drinking water reserves of the world.

The Glaciers National Park (Parque Nacional Los Glaciares) covers a surface of 600,000 hectares with 47 glaciers, such as the Viedma, the Moyano, the Marconi, the Upsala, the Agassiz, the Bolado, the Onelli, the Peineta, the Spegazzini, the Mayo, the Ameghino, the Moreno and the Frias, all of them located within the Atlantic basin.

Attractions:

• El Calafate Regional Museum located on the main street, Av. Libertador General San Martin, between Rio Gallegos and Coronel Rosales streets, before the bridge over Arroyo Calafate.
• Time Traveling is a new concept of museum, the Historical Interpretation Centre was inaugurated in Calafate. An interesting and educational place, very close to the city centre.

Useful Information:
El Calafate is a colorful villa, sorrounded by peaceful vegetation. It is a small city of 4,000 inhabitants; the streets have a particularly enchanting presence, characterized by the construction of low, warm and rustic houses and a blue landscape that blends with the sky. The temperature goes from around 19ºC in the summer to -2º in winter.

Location:
El Calafate is 316 km away from Río Gallegos, the capital of Santa Cruz. This town is near the Argentinean Lake (Lago Argentino), a green water surface covering 1,600 km², with a length of 60 km and a width between 12 and 14 km. It also has great mysterious depths, like all lakes orginated from glaciers, ranging from 35 m in Feruglio, on the southern shore, to 300 m off the Avellaneda Peninsula (Peninsula de Avellaneda).

It has a population of around 8,000 inhabitants on a 155,000-hectare surface, with rivers and creeks draining into the Atlantic Ocean through the Santa Cruz River.

How to get there:
By Car:

• Leave 'Esquel' by National Route 40 (Ruta Nacional 40) to the south.
• There will be 180 km of paved road up to 'Gobernador Costa', until you take Provincial Route 20 (ruta provincial 20).
• You will pass by New Lubecka, La Laurita and Los Tamariscos, immediately after this town you must turn right and take Provincial Route 22 (Ruta Provincial 22) to Río Mayo, distant 238 km.

From Gobernador Costa:

• There is no petrol station nearby. Once there you will take National Route 40 (Ruta Nacional 40) and drive 123 km on this pebble road to Perito Moreno.

From Río Gallegos, by Car:

• You will arrive to 'El Calafate' after 315 km on a paved route.
• If you leave from Río Gallegos, you must take National Route 3 (Ruta Nacional 3), Provincial Route 5 (Ruta Provincial 5), National Route 40 (Ruta Nacional 40), and finally Provincial Route 11 (Ruta Provincial 11) to get to the city.

By Plane:

• El Calafate has an International Airport, situated only 18 km from the city. The airplanes operating in this airport are Boeing 727 and 737, and similar aircrafts for domestic flights.
